(Photo: Mantle)Īnother story arc – and another monster – sits alongside all this: that of Perseus, son of Zeus and a human woman imprisoned by her own toxic father. Athena’s revenge on Poseidon is to curse Medusa and turn her into a Gorgon like her sisters. When Medusa is in her teens, she is raped by Poseidon (Zeus’s brother) in a temple to Athena. She plots against her husband while punishing his victims with elaborate curses.Īthena, goddess of war, also favours penalising the victim, not the perpetrator. Thanks to his predilection for raping women and goddesses alike – Haynes thankfully doesn’t palm off rape as seduction – Zeus’s offspring is legion and his wife, Hera, is bitter, furious and keen on revenge. The monsters are elsewhere, on Mount Olympus, home of Zeus and his extended brood.
